Compiling curatorial silence into digital poetry
Ansel Bi
Curator / App Developer
Inside a certain warehouse
Paintings filled the room
Still before me
Not to admire them
To pack them
Palletizing nailing crates labeling wrapping tape
Then
These heavy giants
Landed in Manhattan twelve hours behind Taipei
The year after the Lehman storm
Waiting for the lights to rise in 2009
The curator was a son
The artist was his father
It was the curatorial work I remember most vividly
From my father's work I learned to listen
Not to applause
But to the faint almost inaudible breath
Of a piece being lifted from its crate
And after the lights came up
Someone would walk in
And stand quietly in front of the work
That silence
Was more honest than any words
Nearly twenty years have passed
I have curated nearly sixty exhibitions
Traveling across Asia Europe the Americas and Australia
Served as a private museum advisor
Curated solo and group shows for artists
And offered consultation to collectors and institutions
But I have never forgotten
Never forgotten the sweaty memory of nailing crates and palletizing in the warehouse
Now
I bring that same listening that same delicate rhythm
Into apps and stickers
They are the silent resonance
Between me and every user
Like that light
Softly falling on my father's work
Then
Someone stopped
Quietly
Looked for a long long time
Perhaps
That someone is you

Listen, Then Resonate
Curatorial Notes · From Galleries to Screens
Curating is a long river
What I learned was not how to display
But how to listen
To listen to the language of the work
The breath of the space
The silent gaze of the viewer
A true exhibition
Is where these three find a frequency of resonance
Later
That listening found its way into the digital world
Every app every sticker
Is no longer just a one-sided design
Just as I once listened to artworks
I now listen to every user's voice
Their thoughts their confusions their hopes
Seeping into the code drop by drop
These works
Are shapes co-created by users and the creator
I am never the one who shapes the atmosphere alone
I try to stand in different positions
To feel to empathize to resonate
RubyDays is one example
How does a man design a tool
To accompany women through their cycles
I don't have the answer
I can only listen read
And imagine the daily realities I will never experience firsthand
It is precisely this unknown
That gives creation its gentle possibility
Apps are the same
They are not sealed finished products
They are things waiting to be heard to be resonated with to be completed together
Just like that night in Manhattan
After the lights came up
Someone stood quietly in front of my father's work
And looked for a long time
Curating is like this
Creation is like this
It never ends
